The changes of translation norms. 1930 and 1953 as contexts of the translation of The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. The author presents the preliminary considerations related to a planned study the purpose of which is to reconstruct the history of the Polish translation of Der Zauberberg (The Magic Mountain) by Thomas Mann and examine its impact on the Polish reception of the work. Since each of the two parts of the novel were translated by different translators and because the second volume was translated twice (in 1930 and 1953), the translation contexts are very significant. The article reconstructs the history of the Italian retranslation of Thomas Mann’s "Joseph und seine Brüder". Although Mondadori already published the work (four volumes from 1933 to 1948), shortly after the death of the first translator, the retranslation of the entire tetralogy was commissioned. Based on the letters between the publisher, the author and the new translator, the paper tries to shed light on an unusual case of retranslation, where the rules that generally determine its necessity do not seem to be applicable.

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje rozważania wstępne autorki związane z planowaną rozprawą habilitacyjną, której celem jest zrekonstruowanie historii polskiego przekładu powieści Der Zauberberg (Czarodziejska góra) Thomasa Manna oraz zanalizowanie jego oddziaływania na polską recepcję utworu. Thomas Mann’s novella, Death in Venice (Der Tod in Venedig, 1912), presents a story of an artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, suffering from the writer’s block who travels to Venice to look for inspiration and where he eventually finds his death. The paper proposes an analysis of the reception of Nietzsche’s Die Geburt der Tragödie in Thomas Mann, with particular attention to the essay (1947) dedicated to the philosopher and to Doktor Faustus. The novel is read as an example of productive reception: Nietzsche’s categories of Apollonian and Dionysian, and even more so the idea of a rebirth of the great tragic art, become narrative cues that animate the entire story. The Doktor Faustus does not limit itself to parodying particular concepts of the Birth of Tragedy, but ends up presenting itself as a captivating ‘instruction manual’ for a correct reading of Nietzsche’s work.

The article presents Ricarda Huchs attitude towards the dictatorship of natio- nal socialism in Germany, from which the writer officially disbanded herself in 1933 by resigning from the membership of the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts and concluding at the same time that the Germanness in her opinion does not mean centralization of power, brutal methods and diffusion of people who think differently. This attitude is reflected in the autobiographical text of 1938, Friihling in der Schweiz [Spring in Switzerland] which refers to the experiences and observations of the writer during her stay in Switzerland in 1887-1896.
